carolina, virginia, maryland, and massachusetts. and certainly that should help getting those necessary resources to where they need to go as soon as the storm blows out to sea. now right now the storm is on a path to cape cod, massachusetts, with its 500,000 summer residents. even though a hurricane hitting the northeast is a once in a generation event, emergency officials up there promise that they will be ready. since the storm has been forecast, over 100,000 residents down here in the barrier islands have been forced to evacuate. rob and mike? >> t.j., from your vantage point, any discernible damage in that area or are things pretty minimal? >> reporter: i would say things are minimal. of course, we've had some moments of extreme weather down here. the surf, about 12 feet high. the rain, the wind. certainly the sky has been ominous. but overall, a lot less damage than people expected. and a lot smoother situation, thank goodness. >> certainly good news. t.j., thank you very much for that report. >>> as hurricane earl leaves his mark on north carolina, people in the northeast are now
